Inviting your spouse

1. Spousal Sponsorship for Permanent Residency

As a Canadian PR, you can sponsor your spouse for permanent residence (PR) under the Spouse or Common-Law Partner Sponsorship Program. This is the best option if you want your spouse to live permanently in Canada.

Eligibility for Sponsorship:

  • You must be a Canadian PR residing in Canada. (Unlike Canadian citizens, PRs must stay in Canada while sponsoring their spouse.)

  • Your marriage must be legally recognized under Canadian law.

  • You should not be receiving social assistance (except for disability).

  • You must be financially capable of supporting your spouse for at least three years after they get PR.

Types of Spousal Sponsorship Applications:

  1. Inland Sponsorship (if your spouse is already in Canada on a valid visa)

    • Your spouse may apply for an Open Work Permit while waiting for PR.

  2. Outland Sponsorship (if your spouse is still in outside Canada)

    • Processing is usually faster but requires waiting in home country until PR is approved.

Processing Time:

2. Temporary Option – Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP)
